Gulf of California, Mexico 6/09
Working with the Environment Program of the Walton Family Foundation (WFF), SustainaMetrix was invited to meet with some grantees in the Gulf of California to think holistically and strategically about grantee performance and the results they catalyze in highly complex, rapidly changing ecosystems. The system is based on the Orders of Outcome framework (Olsen, Page, Ochoa 2009) that is designed to make the principles of ecosystem-based management operational through a deep understanding of the...

The Farasan Banks is an offshore coral reef system southeast of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The reef system is fairly well protected from pollution and other stressors common to reefs near populated shorelines, with the exception of fishing pressure, which is notable in the area. Being relatively remote, this area presented the expedition with an opportunity to assess the health of coral reefs in an attempt to understand the factors of resilience to climate change. The expedition will also explore how the existing governance structures could use such...

Until the coastal highway was completed in 2000, this 64km2 estuary was in one of the world's most isolated coastal regions. Maps drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1976 show an estuary surrounded by 15,770ha of mangrove wetlands. According to the inventory of the Military Cartographic Institute (CLIRSEN), by 1999, only 1,863ha of mangroves remained and 13,907ha of shrimp ponds had been constructed along the borders of the estuary previously occupied by mangroves and extending in places both into...
